Comparing 3 different music videos based on narrative
1st video: The Weeknd - False Alarm
2nd video: Bebe Rexha - F.F.F
3rd video: thelonelyisland - YOLO
The Weeknd - False Alarm
False Alarm was filmed in first person from the perspective of the bank robber. Illustration - is the easiest form to show the lyrics in visual form to the audience. The music ties in with what is happening on screen, the video is about a bank robbery going so well at the start and then goes down and people start to die because of loss of trust between each other. At the start of the video when the music starts we hear a low tone song playing in the background, and then when the bank robber steps on the cellphone the music begins and the artist start to sing. From the start of the video, we can hear the diegetic sounds happening during the robbery and the non-diegetic sounds of the music in the background. We hear the sounds like the officer being shot in the head and the glass behind him shattering into pieces, The sound of a smoke bomb being thrown to the entrance of the bank to get out of the view of the police and when the drone appears. From the start of the video, the audience watching it is more likely to take the side of the criminals instead of the police force due to how the music video was filmed and edited making the bad guys seem good and the good guys seem bad. When they knock the door down the beat changes as the first gunshot is heard, and makes the beat faster.
Bebe Rexha - F.F.F
F.F.F was filmed with a lot of jump-cuts between scenes and a lot of shaky camera movement to add an effect towards what is being represented. The music video only shows us 2 characters throughout the video,
thelonelyisland - YOLO
YOLO was filmed in a studio with blue lights, outdoors on the street during the day, a club. The narrative is about different situations which aren't so deadly but the video makes them seem very dangerous and could kill you. The music cuts quite well with the narrative and what is shown on screen with the beat changing, at the start of the video the lights switch well with the melody played that they almost flicker with each beat change. The artist says how to not travel and is shown pointing to different gifs on a road sign of, a boat, a train, a car and a bus all of these transports are in bad conditions, the boat gets eaten by a sea monster, the train gets destroyed by a big boulder, the car drives into a rock and the bus is set on fire. We see a plane when he says don't travel by plane and he himself throws a packed suitcase into the air causing the bag to make the clothes fly everywhere as he says don't travel at all. Build a bomb shelter with titanium wall and we see him wearing a high-vis-vest inside a bomb shelter. When he says This a cautionary tale, word to George Orwell the camera zooms into the book from a person in a location of hand sanitizing products in working clothing and zooms out to him plugging in a cable wire into a socket unsafely. When they say 'say No, No' after a couple of seconds there is a quick timelapse of their faces in close-up while saying 'You oughta look out, Also stand for YOLO' before this, there are different locations filmed of a person in royal clothing and a different person in astronaut clothing. 'You know we are still young' the focus is on Adam and the 3 other men behind raise their fists into the air to show power. 'Burn the prints off your thumb' as Adam continues to burn his thumb off a stove and the other 3 are in agony from burning their own thumbs. At the end of the video, the pace of the music speeds-up and the camera switches between different locations from a club, a stage with lights, an abandoned house with them holding weapons back-to-back. The person is seen suffering from the poison at the kings' location, a person suffocating on a blanket in bed, the person who plugged in the unsafe socket and a person getting bit by a piranha in a sauna. The lights flash rapidly for a second in the studio before the song ends. The music video ends with the sounds of an elephant and a tiger roaring in the background as the text of the new album appear.
